Pensioner killed while walking her dog is named by police

A 75-year-old woman who was killed after being hit by a van while walking her dog has been named by police.

Patricia Bedford was hit while crossing Dewsbury Road, close to Lupset, at around 6.15pm last Wednesday.

She was hit by a blue Volkwagen Transporter, near the junction with Eden Avenue, and died at the scene.

Floral tributes were left at the scene of the accident on Thursday and dozens of people paid tribute to the woman on the Express Facebook page.

Samantha Williamson said: “Rest in peace. This lady was my neighbour for about four years.

“She was lovely and wished me all the best with my move to Sheffield.

“Dewsbury Road will not be the same without her.”

Chloe Louise Turton said: “Such a tragic way to go. She loved her dog to bits, I really feel for her pet and family.”

Sergeant Ann Drury, of West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “This is a busy road and the collision has happened in the early evening when we would expect a number of people to be in the area.

“I would urge anyone who has witnessed this collision to please call the Major Collision Enquiry Team via 101.”
