Plans have been submitted to Wakefield Council’s planning department to raze Mellwood House on Marshall Drive, South Elmsall.

The dated building of one-bedroom flats has stood empty since earlier this year.

In its place, Wakefield District Housing (WDH) is wanting to build 14 new houses and four bungalows with “ample” off-road parking.

WDH says the aim is to provide rented social housing for families which they say is in demand.

Sue Young, WDH’s executive director of investment, said: “Redevelopment and providing high quality homes is a key part of our business.

“It is a pleasure to be able to continue to provide affordable new homes for our customers across the district thanks to the £520 million re-financing deal we have recently secured to help us to do this.

“This scheme in South Elmsall will enhance the area, attracting more families and professionals and provide a range of modern living options for prospective tenants with excellent transport links and homes close to the countryside.”

This latest housing development is expected to cost around £2.5 million, with over £500,000 worth of investment from Homes England to support the project, to provide much-needed affordable homes for families in the district.

South Elmsall has recently seen a multi-million-pound redevelopment of WDH’s Farfield Court Independent Living Scheme, with all residents’ homes completely refurbished with new kitchens, wet rooms, carpets and flooring along with a new scooter room, a salon and a spa room.
