But thanks to an Ossett hair salon, that burden of cost can be cut with their new sale of pre-loved dresses.

Signature Hair and Beauty, on St Oswalds Place, has set up a pop-up prom dress shop inside the salon selling both new and second-hand dresses.

Owner Lorna Oldroyd said: "It's about getting rid of the stigma of buying second hand clothing and ridding the nerves on pupils going to people's houses to try on the gowns.

"Having them displayed in the salon allows them to be in a shop environment where they can try them on comfortably."

The idea came about after many parents in Wakefield said they struggled to sell on their daughters' prom dresses that had only been worn for a couple of hours for one special occasion.

They decided to come together to promote their idea of selling their pre-loved dresses instead of other parents having to buy brand new gowns.

Lorna said: "It all depends on people's budget. Some families simply can't afford to go to high end stores to buy their daughter's dream dress.

"And these dresses are all one offs - with them being last season no one else will be wearing them."

The dresses range from brand new to pre-loved and include well known brands such as Molly Browns, Angel Forever and Sherri Hill.
