Pub Walk: 24 photos as walkers raise a glass for Wakefield Hospice

Fundraisers tied up their boots and took to the streets and pubs of Horbury on Saturday in support of Wakefield Hospice’s first ever Pub Walk.

Despite the weather challenges presented by Storm Babet on the eve of the walk, the event was still able to go ahead with a slight re-route, with walkers completing a five-mile walk to six pubs in surprisingly warm and dry conditions.

Setting off from registration at Horbury Academy, walkers visited The Bingley, The Old Halfway House, The Cherry Tree, Boons of Horbury and The Cricketers before completing the walk at The Calder Vale Hotel.

Alex Cunniff, Events Fundraiser at Wakefield Hospice said: “We were delighted with the response to our first ever Wakefield Hospice Pub Walk when it was launched this summer, and it was great to see everyone in high spirits throughout the day on Saturday walking in aid of Wakefield Hospice.

“We are so grateful to everyone for their kind support, from our amazing walkers to our incredible team of volunteers and of course all of the establishments which got involved, helping to raise over £20,000 already, with more funds yet to come in.”

Helen Knowles, Director of Income Generation at Wakefield Hospice said: “The current financial climate has presented some real challenges for Wakefield Hospice, and introducing new events like this help to bring in new income and reach new supporters, in turn allowing us to continue to care for local patients and families who need our support.

“We would also like to say a special thank you to The Navigation and Ossett Brewery Taproom, who were initially due to be part of the event and had been great advocates for the walk and the hospice over recent months.

"Unfortunately, due to health and safety conditions brought about by Storm Babet on Friday, these stops had to be missed revised route.”

The hospice have confirmed their intentions to hold its second Annual Wakefield Hospice Pub Walk in 2024.
