Hundreds of people supported a donation drive-through event organised by the Leeds and Wakefield branch of the RSPCA.

People were invited to drive to the RSPCA animal centre on Moor Knoll Lane at East Ardsley with items they wanted to donate to be sold in the charity's fundraising shops, which have reopened this week.

More than 200 cars turned up during the day on Friday (June 12) and around 2,000 bags of items were donated.

People donating were asked to stay in their cars and volunteers opened boots and took donations from back seats of cars.

The event has been hailed a success and a second drive-through donation day has been organised at the Moor Knoll Lane animal centre from 10am to 3pm on Saturday June 27.

Sally Balmforth, head of fundraising for RSPCA Leeds, Wakefield & District Branch, said:" This was something we had never tried before.

People who were having a clear out would simply load their cars up with bags of donations, drive to our animal centre and we would then open their boot taking their donated items out of the car. Then they would drive away. It was all outdoors and we adhered to strict social distancing at all times.

"We had so many positive comments about how well-organised and easy it was to do, which was lovely to hear.

"We were overwhelmed with the support we received from our local community, it was absolutely fantastic.

"We received around 2,000 bags of donations, with 200 plus cars stopping by throughout the day to drop off their donations.

"We had to stop an hour earlier than planned as we completely ran out of space to put everything.

"We just couldn’t believe the response it generated. All donations are quarantined for 72 hours before we take them to our charity shops or put them on our online Ebay shop to raise funds for the animals at our centre.

"As we are a small local charity, and a separate charity to the National RSPCA, getting this amount of donations in for our shops will really help us raise a lot of money for the animals at our animal centre in East Ardsley.

We would just like to thank everyone who has supported us throughout the last few months. Your support has been amazing and we cannot thank you enough.
