Twenty homes have been approved for the site on Wilson Street which was cleared years ago but has become a magnet for anti-social behaviour.

Proposed by LMW Development Solutions, they said: “The site, since becoming vacant, has been subject to fly-tipping with the consequence that it now appears as an eyesore.

“It is overgrown with weeds and grass mounds containing much broken glass and general rubbish.”

The site has been vacant since 2004, which, up until then, was occupied by the now defunct discount supermarket, Kwik Save.

Up to 1997, it was used by the West Riding Bus company as a depot and offices.

In 2009 a planning application was given the green light to demolish the former supermarket and build a new food store.

While the buildings were flattened, the new supermarket was never built and the application has since lapsed.

The land is still earmarked for retail use under the adopted local plan, but Wakefield Council planners admit there has been little appetite to develop the site in over decade.

They said: “Although the principle of the development would not fully accord with the current development site policy requirements, the development of the site for residential use would contribute to the vitality of this area as it has been vacant for over 10 years outweigh any harm.”

The plans show three pairs of semi-detached homes will be built, two blocks of three terraced homes, one block of four terraced homes and one block containing four flats.

The flats will have two bedrooms each, with every house containing three bedrooms.
