Wakefield Council run Pontefract Castle named top attraction by TripAdvisor
Pontefract Castle has been awarded a 'Travellers' Choice Best of the Best 2020' award by Tripadvisor.
The award is given based on positive reviews, ratings and saves on the popular Tripadvisor website, and it places Pontefract Castle in the top 10 percent of visitor attractions worldwide.
Work was completed on the £5million National Lottery Heritage-funded “Key to the North” project last year, with the castle now boasting new paths and walkways, access to areas of the castle not seen for centuries, as well as brand-new family-friendly interpretation boards and a custom-designed children’s playground.
Along with the reopening of the castle’s Liquorice Café, all of this offers a significantly improved visitor experience.
Coun Jacquie Speight, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: “I’m extremely proud that Pontefract Castle has been given this award.
“The major work that took place at the castle has really brought it to life once again and it’s a really exciting place to visit.
“I hope receiving this award brings more visitors to our wonderful district.”
