The Government said social distancing guidelines must continue to be observed at all times when people are outside their home and the council is urging residents and visitors to follow this advice and ensure people stay two metres away from anyone outside their household.

Similar to many supermarkets and other shops, access will be limited into the main market halls and one-way systems have been marked out to help shoppers practice social distancing. There will also be hand sanitiser stations for visitors to use.

Coun Darren Byford, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Regeneration, said: “We’re really pleased to soon be able to fully re-open both our indoor and outdoor markets to all traders.

“We know that this has been a very difficult time for traders and that our markets are very important for many of our residents but it is still incredibly important that we do this safely and I urge visitors to follow the signage and keep a two metre distance from others.

“We want everyone to be able to use and enjoy our markets but we must all take responsibility to keep ourselves, and others, safe and above all we want to welcome back our loyal and new customers to our great markets.”
