Wakefield landlady home-delivers as punters ‘crave hearty pub grub’

A pub landlady says home-delivery services for food and drink are proving popular because people are simply craving “something familiar”.

With regulars and businesses being forced into lockdown, some pubs are offering pick-up or delivery services of their meals to help keep them trading.

The Malt Shovel in Carr Gate is one such pub, and boss Lesley Hird said on Mother’s Day, two days after being forced to shut its doors, they had close to 45 orders for food delivery.

The Bradford Road pub is known for its hearty Sunday dinners and long list of pies on the menu, which have been the most requested.

Ms Hird, 58, said: “I was quite pleasantly surprised at how many people wanted us to deliver and we’ve had an awful lot of inquiries.

“It’s not just that it keeps the pub ticking over, even if it’s at a slower pace, but I think it’s psychologically good for people that they can get something familiar.

“We’re very much a comfort food pub and that’s what people want at the moment.”

After being forced into self isolation when a family member fell ill, the pub had to put service on hold for two weeks but is hoping to be up and running again by this Sunday.

Ms Hird said: It feels like hard work at the moment but that’s because it’s different, it’s the packing it up and making it safe to transport that’s the hard part. It’s me and my daughter - when one is doing the cooking the other is delivering.

“It’s giving us something to do anyway.”
