Wakefield student completes London Marathon on a treadmill due to lockdown

A student from Wakefield completed the London Marathon on a treadmill after this year's event was cancelled.

Alia Muhanna joined the running team at Durham University and was completing training to prepare for the marathon.

Due to coronavirus the London Marathon has been rescheduled to later this year.

Alia said: “I wanted to complete my goal of completing the marathon before I turned 21.”

She completed the marathon on Sunday, before celebrating her 21st birthday yesterday (Tuesday).

“I was really overwhelmed that I completed it, it still hasn’t really sunk in that I completed it yet.

“I was on the treadmill by myself and it was more of a mental gain with me just running there on the same spot. I am proud and I feel like it is a niche achievement.” Alia said.

She completed the 26.2 mile run in three hours 57 minutes while live streaming on Facebook with friends and family all supporting her.

Alia is fundraising for The Outward Bound Trust with all funds raised being donated.
