Wakefield's 'Pam in the Van' receives New Year honour for helping Covid effort

A supermarket worker who helped organise a massive Covid relief effort has also been recognised.

Community champion Pam Abbott who works in the logistics department of Morrisons in Wakefield has received the BEM for services to community engagement.

She became known as ‘Pam in the Van’ as she delivered food parcels and essentials.

She made sure that fresh food and essentials continued to make their way to local foodbanks, youth groups and animal shelters when donations from their regular sources were running low.

She said: “I was totally flabbergasted when I got the email and I initially thought it was someone winding me up and then my boss invited me in for a coffee and said the business had nominated me.

“I get support from the lads who work at the distribution site, even on their days off a lot say ‘can I come in and help’.

“There’s a lot of colleagues I can call upon. I know a lot who will put themselves out there.

When she was forced to self-isolate after a positive case was confirmed from someone she had been in contact with Pam continued to work remotely in isolation, organising donations for her return and using the time to make contact with groups.
