Plans for 171 homes on West Yorkshire Sports and Social Club site

Controversial plans to replace West Yorkshire Sports and Social Club with 171 new homes will go before planners next week.

The application by Persimmon Homes WY & Charles Church WY includes 78 four -bedroom and 57 three-bedroom houses.

Sandal Hall Close and Helmsley Road would both be extended to improve access to the site.

The sports club, which is used by football, tennis, cricket and rugby clubs, will move from its current grounds off Sandal Hall Close, Sandal, to a new site more than a mile away, off Shay Lane, Walton.

Plans to build a new sports club, including a clubhouse, pavilion and two junior football pitches, were agreed back in March.

Objections to the new housing plan were received from residents, councillors, and the Sandal Community Association.

Residents in Sandal and the council have been at loggerheads for 20 years over plans for the site.

A council report said residents were disappointed the application was on the agenda after a substantial number of objections had already been raised to the council.

The plans have been recommended for approval and will be discussed on Thursday.
