Police officer killed in M1 smash

A POLICE officer was killed after being hit by a lorry as he went to help a stranded motorist on the M1 yesterday.

PC Mark Goodlad, 41, died from injuries he suffered in the collision between junctions 39 and 38 on the southbound carriageway at about 4.15pm.

The West Yorkshire Police Motorway Patrol Roads Policing officer had stopped to help a 51-year-old woman whose car had broken down on the hard shoulder.

The woman suffered minor injuries when the lorry struck PC Goodlad and a marked police car.

A 44-year-old male HGV driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
