Police warning after elderly victims are targeted in distraction thefts

Wakefield residents are being warned to be vigilant after a spate of distraction thefts targeted at elderly people.

Police say that in the last two weeks, there have been three thefts from older people where two suspects work together.

One distracts the victim by asking for directions, while the second steals the victim’s bank card or purse.

The offences have usually happened around a supermarket.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “We would ask everybody to be alert to this type of behaviour and make sure that your purse or wallet is not in a place where it could easily be stolen.

“As always, if you witness any offences, please report it to the police by calling 101 or in an emergency call 999.”
