Two new temporary buildings planned for Wakefield's largest vaccination centre

Permission has been granted for the installation of two portable buildings at Wakefield's largest vaccination centre.

The centre, at Spectrum Community Healthcare on Navigation Walk, Wakefield, opened last month, and is home to one of West Yorkshire's largest vaccination centres.

A national Covid-19 antibody treatment trial is also being carried out at the centre, which last year hosted a world-first treatment trial.Spectrum has faced challenges accommodating both programmes, and has now been granted permission to install two portable medical cabins, known as Medcabs, on the site.

In a statement submitted to Wakefield Council's planning department, a spokesperson for Spectrum said: "[The] vaccination program will last a minimum of 12 months.

"The protocol for the Anti-Body trial needs to ensure that the participants re-visit their original vaccination centre, something which now presents a challenge as a mass vaccination site.

"In order to keep mass vaccination and anti-body trial participants separate, the most appropriate solution is to house a medical specification portacabin at the site.

"This will site on Spectrum's own freehold space and not encroach on roadways or footpaths, public or private.”

Wakefield Council has granted permission for the two portable cabins to be installed on the site for up to two years.
