‘University campus in Wakefield is very much needed’

A university campus in the city could be moving closer as council bosses continue to work on their plans.

Wakefield Council has teamed up with the city’s college to open up a university centre.

Council leader Peter Box said he hopes to be able to make a “positive announcement” soon.

He said: “We are continuing to push for a university centre.

“I am hopeful that there will be a positive announcement by the end of the year with regards to funding.

“A university is very much needed so we can raise aspirations, nurture the dreams of young people and encourage people to achieve their ambitions.”

Coun Box said the council is “working closely” with the college to secure the investment needed.

He said: “Our young people are the future and the university centre would make a huge difference to our district.”
