Voters ready to choose at the ballot boxes

There are 21 seats up for grabs at the local election at the vote, 15 Labour seats and six Conservative.

In total, there are 78 candidates standing for seven different parties, including UKIP, the Green Party, Liberal Democrats and the Trade Union and Socialist Party.

Wakefield Council is currently made up of 52 Labour councillors and 11 Conservative councillors.

Polling stations across the district will be open from 7am until 10pm.

Eligible voters should have already received their polling cards.

The results of the election will announced on Friday, May 23.
