Voters ready to choose at ballot boxes

Voters are preparing to go to the polls ahead of the local elections next week.

There are 21 seats up for grabs at the local election at the vote, 15 Labour seats and six Conservative.

In total, there are 78 candidates standing for seven different parties, including UKIP, the Green Party, Liberal Democrats and the Trade Union and Socialist Party.

Wakefield Council is currently made up of 52 Labour councillors and 11 Conservative councillors.

Voting for this year’s elections takes place on Thursday, May 22.

Polling stations across the district will be open from 7am until 10pm.

Joanne Roney, retuning officer and chief executive, said: “As polling day approaches nearer, we want to remind people to use their votes and have their say on who they want to represent them both on Wakefield Council and in the European Parliament.

People voting by post should fill in and return their ballot papers as soon as they can. Don’t delay - make sure your vote counts.”

Eligible voters should have already received their polling cards.

The results of the election will announced on Friday, May 23.
