A £500,000 fundraising drive has been launched to help bring a skate park and new sports area to Walton.

Walton Sports and Social Club, on Shay Lane, has secured planning permission for a multi-use games area, skate park and children’s playground.

But they now need to raise money to pay for the facilities.

A car boot sale at the centre on Bank Holiday Monday will help to get the project moving.

And volunteers have been invited to a meeting next month, where a working group will be formed to help secure grand funding for the scheme.

Treasurer of the club’s committee Darran McGuire said the project would be of great benefit to the village.

He said: “At the moment there is not much for young people to do, and as a community centre we want to provide something for every age group.

“People are talking a lot generally about anti-social behaviour and excess weight, so it would be great to provide something positive like this for young people.

“We’re pleased to have got planning permission, and we’re now trying to form a committee to go forward and raise the money. There’s a lot of hard work in front of us.”

The car boot sale will run from 6.30am until 1pm, while the public meeting for forming a working group will take place at the centre on Wednesday, September 18, at 6.30pm.
