Protesters call for ‘bedroom tax’ axe

Hundreds of people have marched together to call on the government to axe to so-called bedroom tax.

Organisers of the protest in Leeds city centre today (Saturday) estimated more than 800 people took part.

They are opposed to changes to the benefits system that were introduced by the government this month.

It affects people who claim housing benefit and have ‘spare’ bedrooms in their homes.

As a result some claimants have seen their benefits cut by 14 per cent for one empty bedroom, and 25 per cent for two.

Charities have warned the controversial policy could result in people losing their homes.
