Quaint taste of country life at deli in the heart of the city

Cream teas, thick-cut sandwiches piled high on tiered plates and cups of tea served in dainty china cups are more synonymous with the quaint shops on York’s cobbled streets.

Mr and Mrs C’s on The Bullring fits that mould.

With its weathered-looking tables and light-coloured decor, the deli has a touch of class and a rustic, stylish look you’d not expect from a place surrounded by some of Wakefield’s liveliest nightspots.

The tables are actually home-made from pallets and giant reels, fitting perfectly with the ‘shabby chic’ look owner Dawn Dainton is aiming for.

Dawn took over in May, but with such a reputation for quality (just look on Trip Advisor) chose to stick with the name given by the previous owners. Even on a sleety Wednesday lunchtime, the place is almost full, bustling with teenagers to young mothers to the elderly.

“It’s going really well,” says Dawn, as she takes a 30 second break from serving.

A former nursery nurse, who also used to work in the restaurant at The Star in Kirkhamgate, she has clearly been successful in putting her own stamp on the place.

Tradition and forward thinking collide, with ingredients sourced from the Yorkshire postcodes where possible and 21st century choices making it onto the menu.

“We’re getting more and more people asking about vegan food,” adds Dawn, as she carefully prepares an appetising display of diary-free chocolate cakes.

“We only know of one other place that does vegan food, but it’s becoming very popular.”

Opening Times: Mon-Fri 9am to 4pm and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays. Closed Sundays but can be booked for an event.
