RAM raiders smashed a car through the front of village shop.

Police said the gang drove a yellow Rover MG through the front of the One Stop Shop, on Church Road, Altofts.

The raiders then stole cigarettes before escaping in a silver Seat Leon which sped off towards Whitwood.

Officers from the Normanton neighbourhood police team (NPT) are now hunting four suspects believed to have been involved in the raid which happened at around 2.15am on Friday, September 14.

Gillian Massey of Church Road saw the incident from her bungalow across the road.

She said: “I was in bed at the time and heard a big bang and thought it was a garage door banging.

“When I looked out of the window I saw a big yellow car which had been rammed into the shop.

“It had gone through the shutters and into the shop door and window, they were broken and there was glass everywhere.

“Soon after I heard all the police alarms going and there were police cars and vans here.”

Police want anyone who saw the Seat Leon car in the area at the time of the raid, or in the days before to contact them.

Insp Lisa Kirkland of Normanton neighbourhood police team (NPT) said: “Inquiries are ongoing and some members of the public have come forward with information already.

“But we would urge anyone who has seen anything suspicious or has information which may help to get in touch.”

Anyone with any information should contact Wakefield CID by ringing 101.
