A recipe book with a flavour of Castleford

A book of recipes called ‘Castleford Born and Bread’ will go on sale at the library from Friday, June 17.

It is part of a joint initiative between Castleford Heritage Trust (CHT), which has produced the book, and the Friends of Castleford Library.

As the book’s title suggests the recipes are suitable for use with the stoneground wholemeal flour from Queen’s Mill on Aire Street.

CHT member John Parker will be promoting Castleford Born and Bread, a new book of recipes suitable for use with the stoneground wholemeal flour produced by the trust at Queen’s Mill.

The book, which was compiled by trust member John Parker, contains almost 40 recipes provided by CHT volunteers, from bread to bacon suet parcels and banana muffins, seasonal specialities and traditional Yorkshire dishes, plus contributions from MP Yvette Cooper and her husband Ed Balls.

It also includes a history of milling on the Aire Street site, where flour has been produced since the 11th century, and tells the story of Dr Thomas Allinson who took over the mill in 1921 to produce his famous flour “with nowt taken out”. The book costs £6.99.
