Redcats site plan for 96 homes gets go-ahead

Bridge Homes LLP can now build one, two, three, four and five-bed houses and bungalows at the plot on Horbury Road, previously occupied by the mail order firm.

The development will be a joint venture between the council and Wakefield and District Housing (WDH), who both have a share in Bridge Homes.

Planning documents said the homes would “increase choice and variety and help to accelerate delivery of housing in the Wakefield district”.

Architects Spawforths said the houses would be a mix of “traditional” homes with details from 19th and 20th century architecture and more “streamlined and minimal” modern designs.

The housing estate will be accessed via an existing junction, used by Redcats, onto Horbury Road.

The neighbouring City of Wakefield Golf Club will also be accessed from the same junction and its existing separate access to Horbury Road will be closed up.

Three objections were lodged against the proposals, raising concerns including highways safety, congestion and pollution.

But Wakefield Council officers deemed the site “suitable and sustainable” to deliver housing. And the plans were approved by councillors on the Planning and Highways Committee yesterday.
