A devoted daughter is raising funds and awareness of cervical cancer in memory of her mum who died of the disease 20 years ago.
Jo Clarke, of Ossett, is holding a family fun day to raise money for Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust in memory of her mum, Mary Walker.
Mrs Walker, of Walton, died from cervical cancer 20 years ago, aged just 45.
Mrs Clarke, 39, said: “Since my mum died I’ve wanted to raise awareness of this dreadful disease.
“I want to make a difference. So I approached my friends and we set up the My Mum Mary committee to raise money to mark 20 years since my mum’s death.”
Mrs Clarke and her friends have organised a family fun day, 10 mile walk and tandem bike ride.
The fun day will take place on Saturday, May 9 at West Yorkshire Sports and Social Club, Sandal Hall Close. Registration for walkers and tandem biker riders is 9.30am.
Mrs Clarke added: “I can’t thank my husband, children and friends enough for supporting me.
“My mum missed a smear test and by the time she had one it was too late.
“Busy working mum’s don’t look after themselves enough, we’re all guilty of putting things off.
“My mum was my best friend and I don’t want anyone else to go through what we have.
“I hope lots of people come along to help us raise money for this great cause.”
