Restriction on e-cigarettes now in force

Restrictions are now in place on the sale of electronic cigarettes.

From today (October 1) West Yorkshire Trading Standards will enforce age restrictions on e-cigarettes, inhaling devices and refill cartridges and substances.

It is now illegal for retailers to sell the products to anyone under 18 and for adults to buy, or try to buy, tobacco products or e-cigarettes for someone under the age of 18.

Adults who are caught flouting the law, could be given a £50 fixed penalty notice or fined up to £2,500.

Coun Alison Miles, deputy chairwoman of the West Yorkshire Trading Standards Committee said: “It is important that retailers have procedures in place to ensure that they do not break the law. The law is designed to protect children and it is vital that we all do what we can to enforce this. Anybody who is unclear about the law should contact trading standards.”

David Lodge, Head of West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service said, “As with any legislation it is necessary for everyone to be compliant. Trading Standards can provide information to retailers regarding age restricted products and advise on best practise to ensure businesses are doing all they can to prevent under age sales.”
