Ruby, Ruby, Ruby ... its almost time for Wakefield’s 2014 Rhubarb Festival

Final preparations are being made for the city’s annual food, drink and rhubarb festival which takes place later this month.

Celebrity chefs from television will cook culinary treats at this year’s event which takes place from Friday, February 21, to Sunday, February 23, in the city centre.

There will also be a series of craft workshops at the event.

Coun David Dagger, cabinet member for sport, culture and libraries, said: “This year’s festival is sure to be fantastic, with lots to see and do for all the family.

“I hope as many people as possible come along to see what we have to offer and join in the many activities available.”

This year’s chefs include Simon Rimmer from Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, former Coronation Street star Sean Wilson, ITV children’s favourite Ben Ebbrell from Munchbox and Rachel Green, star of ITV Yorkshire’s Flying Cook and World on a Plate programmes.

Festival compere and chef Richard Fox will officially open the festival on Friday, February 21.

Mr Fox will launch the Nom, Nom, Nom book club – run by Wakefield Council’s libraries service – in the festival marquee on February 22 at 2.15pm with demonstrations of recipes from his own book

Coun Dagger added: “We’re excited about the chefs that will be joining us for the festival and I’m sure they will attract people from across the country.”

The festival will also include local chefs Shaun Mounsey, Create Café in Wakefield, Heather Copley from Farmer Copley’s, Liam Duffy from Iris Restaurant, Stephanie Moon from Rudding Park and Ashley McCarthy from Ye Old Sun Inn.

There will also be cookery demonstrations, street food, stalls, walks, tours and a Yorkshire-themed market at the event.

And festival mascot, as pictured, Ruby Rhubarb , will be joining in with celebrations.

It will run from 10am to 5pm on Friday and 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.
