Ryhill Post Office to reopen in church

Householders have spent a year fighting for the service after the former post office, on Mill Lane, shut last summer when the postmistress – who owned the building – retired.

The closure meant residents had to travel to Havercroft Post Office.

Now Royal Mail has announced it will open a new outreach post office on three days a week at St Paul’s Methodist Church, in Chapel Street.

Resident Peter Jones, 66, of Cemetery Road, said: “I think it’s excellent news for the whole village.

“It will be great for elderly residents who will be able to get out and about in the community once more.”

Hemsworth MP Jon Trickett said: “The closure of Ryhill Post Office created problems for local residents who were left unable to access money and services.

“Many people who had difficulty travelling further afield to a post office or cash point were isolated by the closure.

“After a long battle, the residents of Ryhill will once more have access to many of the vital services the post office can provide.”

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We are pleased to announce that Ryhill Post Office will be reopening.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure and reassure customers that we always had the intention of restoring the service to the community and maintaining services in the area.”

The post office will reopen on Wednesday, July 9 from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

It will then be open on Mondays 9am to 1pm and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9.30am to 12.30pm.
