Sainsbury’s applies to sell alcohol at proposed store

Sainsbury’s submitted an application to build the shop on Bridge Road in Horbury Bridge in April this year.

It has now applied to sell alcohol at the proposed site between 7am and 11pm.

The supermarket said it will maintain adequate levels of staff and security at all times.

And if the plans are approved, it could start selling alcohol at the proposed times immediately.

But campaigners said the proposed shop in the car park of the Ship Inn will cause traffic chaos.

The Pride in Horbury Bridge Community Group said: “The existing open outlets are well managed and sale of alcohol is selectively controlled.

“This prevents over consumption and alcohol abuse, which other would lead to rowdy behaviour and disorder.

“An additional supermarket outlet would not have the same local knowledge and control.”

Wakefield Council’s licensing committee will discuss the plans on Tuesday, November 24.
