THERE’S no need to travel to London for the Proms – you can enjoy rousing classical music at one of the city’s most historic sites for free.
The Friends of Sandal Castle have secured the internationally-renowned West Yorkshire Police Band to play at the first Sandal Castle Proms later this month.
The event is one of the first for the recently-formed friends group, who aim to increase the use of the historic castle.
Committee member Keith Souter said: “Not everyone is aware that Wakefield has this fantastic old building and we want to try and get as many people as possible using the site. Nothing like this has taken place at the castle before and we think it will be a great event.”
The police band has performed all across the world and have been chosen to play at the tenth anniversary of the Twin Towers attack in New York in September.
There is no need for a ticket for the event, which starts at 2.30pm on Sunday, July 31. Refreshments will be available but picnics are encouraged. An after-party will be held at The Priory bar, Wakefield, from 5pm.
