People of all ages dug into the dressing-up box on Saturday to have their pictures taken with pirate scarecrow One-Eye Jake at The Star Inn.

Last weekend’s launch event featured a number of attractions. The festival’s 2017 mascot, Tommy the Tyke, was there with his border collie pup. There’s a competition to guess the name of the puppy, which will run until the festival weekend of September 23 and 24.

Sandal Community Association member Neil Brook’s two vintage cars were on display in the car park while experienced scarecrow builders gave advice on how to make them. Wakefield Riding for the Disabled Association ran a tombola and received all the profits from Saturday’s event, £284.

Festival co-ordinator Jean Chaplin said: “There was a great atmosphere and our thanks to the Star for helping us make it such an enjoyable morning. Thanks, too, to the volunteers without whom the event would not have been possible.”
