Scheme will help get young people working

A new scheme been launched in South Kirkby that will create employment for young people aged 18 to 24 from across the district.

SESKU Academy has been commissioned by the YOUR Consortium, to run the Big Lottery funded Talent Match scheme, in partnership with South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council.

The five-year project, will provide work experience placements and create jobs for people lacking the skills to get into work, as well as the unemployed.

An open day was held to mark the official launch of the scheme at SESKU Academy, Burntwood Community Centre, last Wednesday.

Adam Redfern, senior manager, said: “The aim is to support young people to develop talent and then match them with a career, so that they have the confidence to earn their own income and sustain long term employment.”

Others delivering the scheme locally with the support of the Young Lives Consortium, The Youth Association and the Ahead Partnership, are the Ryecroft Youth Centre and Prospects on Cross Street in Wakefield.

Nathan Young, 20, of Faith Street, South Kirkby, is on a sports coaching placement and gets to work with pupils at local schools through the scheme he joined two months ago.

He said: “I was unemployed and had nothing to do before I found out about this. I am really enjoying it and feel really positive about the future now. I’m really looking forward to getting a job at the end of it.”
