X FACTOR stars, drag queens and comedians entertained thousands of people who packed into the city to celebrate Wakefield Pride 2011.
Rainbow flags were waved proudly as more than 7,000 people enjoyed two events in the precinct and on Southgate on Sunday.
Wakefield Pride Not Prejudice held their event in the city centre for the first time in two years.
Judith Ineson, chairwoman of Wakefield Pride Not Prejudice, said: “It was an absolutely fantastic day. Everything went to plan and thankfully there was no trouble.
“The precinct was extremely busy and we were really pleased to see a diverse mix of people.”
The NU (Newly United) Wakefield Pride 2011 group held their event on Southgate, which included a performance from X Factor stars Same Difference.
Organiser Sol Pickwell Nicolaou said: “It was a fantastic turnout and the Nu Wakefield Pride Committee would like to give a big thanks to everyone that attended throughout the event, making it the biggest yet.
“Also many thanks go to the whole team that worked like mad to make the event perfect.”
The Mayor of Wakefield, Coun Ros Lund, also went along to enjoy the celebrations.
She said: “I am always pleased to celebrate the diversity of our communities.
“I am always happy to see events like these taking place in Wakefield and to see people enjoying themselves. Sunday was a proud day.”
