The would-be bombers were each handed jail terms of 18 years and nine months or more during a sentencing at the Old Bailey today (Monday).

Jewel Uddin, 27, Omar Mohammed Khan, 31, and Zohaib Ahmed, 22, were ordered to serve 19 years and six months each with five years extended licence.

Mohammed Hasseen, 24, Anzal Hussain, 25, and Mohammed Saud, 23, were ordered to serve 18 years and nine months each with five years extended licence.

The men, all from the West Midlands, admitted preparing for an act of terror in April.

Hasseen also pleaded guilty to possessing documents likely to be of use to a person preparing or committing an act of terrorism.

Assistant Chief Con Marcus Beale, of West Midlands Police, said: “Today’s sentences see the end of a complex investigation into a group who were actively planning an attack on the EDL.

“Their plot failed and these men face a long time in prison.”

Five of the men travelled to Dewsbury on June 30 last year to carry out an attack on the EDL rally.

They were armed with two shotguns, swords, knives, a nail bomb containing 458 pieces of shrapnel, and a partially-assembled pipe bomb.

But the gang arrived two hours after the demo had dispersed.

Their plan came to light after a road traffic officer stopped one of their cars by chance and a haul of weapons was found in the boot.

Asst Chief Con Beale added: “The counter terrorism network has successfully stopped many plots over recent years, but as recent tragic events show, there is no room for complacency.

“It is vital that members of the community remain vigilant to the fact that terrorist attacks remain a strong possibility and call us if they have concerns.”
