Robert and Paula Maguire, of Hammerton Farm Avenue, Ryhill, have taken part in the ice bucket challenge to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association in memory of Mrs Maguire’s uncle, Stuart Hughes.

Mr Hughes lost his battle with the disease in 2009 and the couple have raised money for the association ever since.

The ice bucket challenge involves having a bucket of ice cold water tipped over your head, then you nominate two friends, who have 24 hours to do the same thing.

Mr Maguire, 45, said: “We’d seen the ice bucket challenge go viral in America for the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association - the US motor neurone disease charity.

“It seemed like a great opportunity for us to raise money and awareness of the condition over here.”

The couple, who have raised more than £12,000 for the MND Association, are no strangers to weird and wonderful challenges.

They have taken part in the Great North Run several times and jumped in the Irish Sea at Llandudno on Boxing Day last year in fancy dress.

Mrs Maguire, 40, has also done a skydive, the Great South Run, Great Yorkshire Run and the 100k Race To The Stones.

Mr Maguire added: “My wife tends to do the hard stuff like jumping out of aeroplanes but that’s not my cup of tea so I thought I’d try this.”
