SLIDESHOW - Sunshine draws in the crowds at Featherstone Gala

Segways, zorbing and fairground rides were just some of the attractions at this year’s Featherstone Gala.

The event, organised by Featherstone Town Council, kicked-off with a parade from St Wilfrid’s Catholic High School before an afternoon of fun at Purston Park on Saturday.

Mayor of Featherstone Coun Maureen Tennant-King officially opened the gala before youngsters battled it out in a series of races.

Coun Graham Isherwood, town council leader, said: “It was an absolutely fabulous day. When we first got to the park to help set everything up at about 6.30am we had some heavy rain and the thunderstorms the night before.

“But by the time the parade left the school the weather was scorching hot and that certainly helped draw in the crowds.

“I would say we had more than 1,000 people visit throughout the day.”

Attractions also included music, dog shows and charity stalls.

More than 300 balloons were also released for the annual race which raised money for the mayor’s charity - the Alzheimer’s Society.

Prizes were presented for fancy dress costumes at the event, which had an American Independence Day theme.

Coun Isherwood said: “All of the attractions went down really well especially the zorbing and the Segways.

“The children who came absolutely loved them.”

Youngsters at North Featherstone Junior and Infants School prepared for the gala by making their own costumes and enjoying an American themed lunch on Friday.

Firefighters at the town’s station thanked people who bought hats on their stall at the gala, which raised £218 for the Firefighters Charity.
