Highlights of this year’s Armed Forces Day at Pontefract Park included a Hurricane flypast and parachute freefall display.

It was the first year the annual event was held at the park. And organisers at Wakefield Council said there were more events and attractions than ever before.

Coun Sandra Pickin, the district’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “It is always a really special occasion and an opportunity to recognise the contribution of those who have fought to protect our country and are still serving.

“This year’s event was bigger and better than ever before. It was great to see so many people enjoying the fantastic attractions and activities that took place throughout the day.”

The day’s attractions included a falconry display, climbing towers, bungee trampolines and paintballing.

More than 400 trees were planted at the park in March in memory of local soldiers who died in the Great War.
