SLIDESHOW: Wakefield-on-Sea – without the long drive to the coast…

Instead of spending hours sitting in traffic while heading to the coast, hundreds of people decided to go to the lesser-known seaside resort of Wakefield last weekend.

The city centre was transformed into a coastal haven for Wakefield Council’s annual Seaside in the City weekend, with a beach, donkeys, deckchairs and pedal boats.

Around 50,000 people made the most of the bursts of sun to enjoy the activities on offer including live music, food and craft stalls, sand art and windmill making workshops plus taking a ride on the Victorian carousel.

Coun Les Shaw, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport said: “Seaside in the City is always a fun-filled weekend which brings residents from all over the district together in this popular community event.

“It is brilliant to see many people including families and young children really enjoy themselves.

“There were a whole host of different activities for the whole family and with 50,000 people coming to the event it highlights the huge success of the weekend. Even the sun made a welcoming appearance.”

There was also sand sculptures and seaside props in The Ridings and hook-a-duck and candy floss stalls in Trinity Walk.
