Speaking up for Wakefield

A school debating team will fly the flag for Wakefield in a national public speaking competition in Cambridge on Saturday.

Year 11 students Eve Howarth, Ellie Irvine and Joe Reid, from Silcoates School, will take part in the finals of the 2016 Winston Churchill Public Speaking Competition.

The trio is one of only eight teams across the country who have reached the final stage of the English Speaking Union organised event at Churchill College in Cambridge.

The topic will be ‘Should we be concerned about developments in the US presidential primary?’

The team will showcase their persuasive speaking, questioning and summarising skills.

Lead Speaker Eve Howarth said: “I’m really excited about the opportunity to speak in Cambridge and to compete in such a prestigious event. I’m hoping we can do ourselves justice against what will surely be high calibre opponents.”
