A spokesman said: “Pontefract Food Bank is run by volunteers and supported by voluntary donations of food and money, it aims to help local people in food crisis. The food bank welcomes people who are referred by workers such as the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and teachers who have assessed that there is an urgent need for food.”

It works to help people in crisis and, if possible, directs them to sources of help which can help lift people out of trouble and get them to manage their lives independently.

The spokesman added: “Wakefield District City of Sanctuary is a small voluntary organisation that helps refugees who have been allowed to claim asylum in this country, including people from conflict areas such as Syria.

“Its volunteers help with friendship, advice and support, working closely with organisations such as the Red Cross Family Tracing Service.
