Sunny seaside is on its way to Wakefield city centre

When you think of sandy beaches, donkey rides and flip-flops, you may not think Wakefield.

But this weekend, the Cathedral precinct will be transformed into a coastal resort when Seaside in the City returns.

Families are invited to bring a bucket and spade and enjoy a sandy beach.

Other attractions include free donkey rides, face painting, balloon modelling, workshops, Punch and Judy shows and stalls while stilt-walking lobsters and walkabout pirates will be on hand to offer even more coastal-themed entertainment.

There will be a TV screen, sponsored by First Choice Recruitment, showing Toy Story, Happy Feet and Madagascar.

A caricaturist will be drawing visitors at The Ridings Shopping Centre and there will be a Victorian Carousel for visitors to enjoy.

Coun Les Shaw, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport at Wakefield Council, said: “This is always a hugely popular event and I hope once again lots of families will come and join in.”

The free event takes place from 10am until 5pm tomorrow and 10am until 4pm on Sunday.
