Take advantage of volunteering opportunities in Wakefield district

Residents can take advantage of a number of volunteering roles within the council, including school governor, sports coaches, litter picking, youth workers, library workers, snow wardens, event stewarding and acting as a nominated adult for vulnerable young people and adults in custody.

Opportunities are also available within the community as older people’s clubs, conservation groups and community centres are often on the lookout for volunteers.

National Volunteering Week runs from June 1-7 and the council is keen to get more people giving up their time. The council has been working with partner organisation Nova Wakefield District, the support organisation for the Third Sector.

Coun Maureen Cummings, cabinet member for environment and communities, said: “Volunteering is about giving your time to do something useful and in return you get the satisfaction of time and effort well spent.

In addition, volunteering can be a great way to meet new people, learn new skills and gain useful experience. Volunteers play a vital role in keeping community groups and organisations going. It will not only make a real difference to your own life, but the lives of those around you. So please find out more about how you can support your local community.”
