Tech-savvy teenager is invited to USA for international science event

Tech-savvy secondary school pupil Nicole Hirst is celebrating double success after designing a head support and cushion for people living with Narcolepsy.

The Horbury Academy student came up with the product at an after school Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) club. It is designed to keep people in a stable position and injury free if they suddenly fall asleep or lose muscle control whilst travelling in a car.

Nicole has been named Runner-up Junior Young Engineer of the Year 2018 at a Big Bang Fair in Birmingham,

And she has also been invited to attend a STEM event in Pittsburgh, America in May.

The event, The Broadcom MASTERS International, brings together teenagers from across the globe, recognised as some of the brightest, rising stars in science, engineering and leadership.

A spokeswoman for Horbury school said: “It is amazing news for her as an entrepreneur and a huge success story for our STEM club.

“Nicole will participate in specialised programming, fun and engaging hands-on science and engineering activities, and will also attend activities at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

“Well done Nicole, you’re certainly flying high!”

Last year, Nicole entered her creation into a nationwide Teen Tech competition. She presented her design to judges including Evan Davis from Dragons’ Den, Professor Brian Cox and Dr Christian Jessen from Embarrassing Bodies.
