Friends and family of a teenager who died while waiting for a heart operation will hold a sponsored fancy dress walk in his memory.

Sam Tandy, 15, of Alverthorpe, collapsed and died in 2008 while waiting for a date for an operation at Leeds General Infirmary’s children’s heart surgery unit to replace a valve.

The Outwood Grange College student, who was born with a heart defect, had been treated at the unit on numerous occasions.

His family have since raised more than £11,000 for the children’s heart surgery fund and will raise even more during a walk on Sunday.

They will set off from The Old Mill pub, on Horbury Road, at noon and walk five miles to The Crown, in Alverthorpe.
