The parents of Bobby and Christi Shepherd took their fight to hear the truth about their children’s deaths in Corfu to Downing Street.

Their mother, Sharon Wood and her husband Paul, and their father Neil Shepherd and his wife Ruth, met the Prime Minister David Cameron at number 10 yesterday

They were joined by Wakefield MP Mary Creagh.

Ms Creagh has backed the Express #TimeForTheTruth campaign to overturn a decision not to grant legal aid to pay for representation at the children’s inquest next year.

It would be the only chance to hear the truth in a British Court about what happened at the Louis Corcyra Beach Hotel in October 2006.

Both Robert and Christianne were killed by carbon monoxide fumes that seeped in to the chalet where they were staying with their father Neil and his then partner Ruth.

Ms Creagh said: “The Prime Minister was very sympathetic to the parents’ request and gave some advice on how they should put their case to the Legal Aid Agency.

“I am working with the justice minister, Shailesh Vara MP, who was also present at the meeting, and the family’s solicitor to ensure that the submission that we make to the Legal Aid Agency is as strong as possible.

“We also discussed the underlying public interest of the case. We were able to give the Prime Minister examples of where people have continued to die from carbon monoxide poisoning whilst on holiday to demonstrate that the travel industry has not learnt the lessons from Bobby and Christi’s deaths, and that the family need legal representation to ensure no other family suffers a similar tragedy in future.”

The half-term holiday had been booked through Thomas Cook.

In 2010 two employees of the holiday firm were cleared of any wrongdoing but the manager of the Louis Corcyra Beach Hotel and two other staff were convicted of manslaughter.

The inquest is due to start in Wakefield next January.

Coroner David Hinchliff has supported the family’s fight for legal aid funding saying it is the only way a fair, thorough and fearless inquest can take place.

Almost 5,000 people have signed the Express #TimeForTheTruth petition so far.
