Tour de Yorkshire project goes on display

Pupils from Hemsworth Arts and Community Academy (HACA) and four local primary schools produced art work to cover a wooden penny-farthing bicycle (pictured).

The completed bike, which has been constructed by Faceless Arts and stands at 2.3m high and 2.7m long, was on display at Wakefield Market for the start of stage three of the Tour de Yorkshire last weekend.

Pupils from HACA, Kinsley Primary School, Ackworth Bell Lane Primary School, Ryhill J&I School and Grove Lea Primary covered the large wheel with a collage of art depicting the sporting activities in the district.

Stephen Foster, HACA assistant principal, said: “The penny farthing being placed in the library will not only be a reminder of the day the Tour of Yorkshire came to Wakefield but also a visual reference to all the activities that can be undertaken in and around the city.”

The penny-farthing will go on display at Wakefield Library on Burton Street, until the end of summer.
