Motorway cameras show many vehicles queuing along the westbound carriageway.

In a tweet, Highways England said: "#M62 westbound J23 #outlane to J22 #Denshaw. Due to heavy rain and flooding we have a lane closed for contractors to clear the water. There are long delays on the approach to this area.

"There are currently delays of 60 minutes above the usual travel times on approach to this #M62 lane closure. There is 8.5 miles of congestion back to J24. Please allow extra time for your journey, should you be travelling in the area."
