The roundabout, at the junction of the M62 and M1 near Wakefield, closed last month to allow engineers to carry out a massive restoration project on 20 bridge joints.

It will remain closed for a further six weeks, with diversions in place.

Highways England project manager, Russell Mclean said: “We have prioritised the north bridge over the M1 carriageway, where we have had the most unplanned closures due to failures.

"Three of the five joints need extensive work and we have had to use hydro-demolition - this is where we use high-pressure water jets to remove or demolish concrete without damaging the structure, so we can replace them.

“Over the last week we have also removed the waterproofing course from all four bridges which has allowed us to inspect three of the bridges so far, so we have made good progress at this early stage.

"I ask that drivers continue to plan their journeys when travelling in the area, and want to thank them again for their patience.”

Lofthouse Interchange opened in 1970, and now carries an estimated 40,000 vehicles a day.

Work had initially been planned for later in the year, but has been brought forward to take place while Covid-19 restrictions are in place, so that engineers can make the most of lower traffic volumes.

Highways England said that a complete closure for eight weeks of work would cause the least disruption for drivers.
