Long delays and diversions in place after vehicle fire on M1 near Wakefield

Highways England said that traffic officers and fire crews had been called to a vehicle fire on the M1 southbound between junction 38 (Haigh) and junction 37 (Dodworth) at around 1.45pm this afternoon.

Long queues have been reported, with traffic back almost to junction 39 (Durkar).

The northbound carriageway has also been closed as smoke obscures the carriageway.

Traffic officers have begun releasing the traffic on the northbound carriageway, but delays are expected to continue for some time.

An official diversion on the Highways England website reads: "Road users travelling northbound are advised to follow the hollow square symbol on road signs.

Exit the M1 at J37 and at the roundabout take the second exit onto the A628, follow for approximately 5 miles until reaching the junction with the A629. Turn right onto the a629 (Halifax Road) and follow for 6 miles until reaching the junction with the A635.

"At the junction turn right (Barnsley Road) and proceed along this road as it changes to the A636 for 10 miles until reaching J38 M1 to re-join the motorway.

"Road users travelling southbound are advised to follow the solid square symbol on road signs.

"Exit the M1 at J38 and at the roundabout at the end of the slip take the fourth exit onto the A637 (Huddersfield Road) and follow for 2 miles until reaching the roundabout with the A636. Take the first exit off the roundabout onto the A636 (Denby Dale Road).

"Follow the A635 for 8 miles until reaching the junction with the A629. Turn left onto the A629 (Penistone Road) and proceed for approximately 6 miles until the roundabout with the A628. Take the first exit from the roundabout onto the A628 (Barnsley Road) and follow for approximately 4 miles until reaching J37 M1 to re-join the motorway.

"Delays are likely on the approach to the closure, with additional journey times also expected on diversion routes. Please allow extra time for your journey if travelling in the area or consider alternative routes."
