M1 motorway to be closed as works on £120m congestion busting scheme continue

Motorists face delays as a £120m scheme to help ease congestion on the M1 motorway continues.

The Highways Agency are carrying out works to upgrade the motorway to a ‘managed motorway.’

As part of the project the southbound carriageway at junction 39 at Durkar will be closed overnight tonight, tomorrow and Sunday.

Motorists will have to exit the main carriageway and rejoin it on the entry slip road.

The closures will be in place from 8pm to 6am each night.

Clearly signed diversions will be in place.

The northbound entry slip road at junction 41 at Carr Gate will also be closed as part of the works.

It will be closed on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The scheme, which is due to be completed by September next year, will see hard shoulders become permanent lanes in both directions during peak times between junction 39 at Durkar and junction 42 at Lofthouse, with the aim of increasing capacity and easing congestion between the two junctions.
